Footwear line has now been removed from the shelves, with the singer saying ‘our intention was never to inflict any pain’.
Hot on the heels of the Gucci ‘blackface’ row, Katy Perry has been forced to apologise over shoe styles that feature ‘racist imagery’.
The singer’s 2018 footwear line – called Ora Face Block Heel and Rue Face Slip-On Loafers – come complete with protruding eyes, bulging noses and full red lips.
The come in nine colours, including black, and were available throughout the world from big name retailers.
They were “envisioned as a nod to modern art and surrealism,” according to the joint statement by Perry Global Brands Group.
But in light of recent fashion faux pas, fans have been quick to slate the designs – which have now been recalled.
One twitter user wrote: “Katy Perry got Blackface shoes??? I thought it was over for her after she danced with the Migos… But this might’ve done it.”
Singer Masika Kalysha said: “So are we just gonna let Katy Perry slide?”
One furious fan demanded she “explain these shoes”, while another said “someone of colour needs to be in the room when the decisions are being made.”
However another backed her and said: “Sorry but YOU are low informed. Blackface = make-up used by a non-black performer playing a black role.
“Those are f**king SHOES. They existed in nine different colorways (black, blue, gold, graphite, lead, nude, pink, red and silver).”
Another user simply said: “Relax.”
Katy Perry did apologise in a joint statement with Global Brands Group.
“I was saddened when it was brought to my attention that it was being compared to painful images reminiscent of blackface. Our intention was never to inflict any pain,” she said.
‘Blackface’ saw white performers use black paint to exaggerate facial features and portray black characters.
Last week exclusive clothing brand Gucci debuted a Balaclava knit top that when pulled over the face was reminiscent of the controversial ‘blackface’.
The Italian brand later apologised for the design – which seemed to feature oversized red lips.
